Softshell vs. fleece for outdoor work
Both fabrics keep you warm, but their properties are very different. We help you choose the right mid layer based on the weather and the job.

When the temperature drops and the work continues outdoors, the mid layer you choose is decisive for comfort and productivity. Softshell and fleece are the two most popular options, but their properties are very different. Here we help you choose the right one for your conditions.
Fleece is a knitted polyester fabric that traps air between the fibres to create insulation. It is light, soft and dries fast. Fleece is an excellent mid layer under a waterproof jacket, but it also works as an outer layer on dry days with little wind. The fabric breathes very well, which makes it ideal for physical work that generates a lot of body heat. The downside: fleece offers minimal wind protection and no water resistance.
Softshell is a more advanced fabric that combines stretch, wind resistance and a degree of water resistance in a single layer. Most softshell jackets have a woven outer face for wind resistance, a soft mid layer for insulation, and an inner face that wicks moisture. Softshell insulates less than a thick fleece, but makes up for it with far better protection against the elements.
For stationary outdoor work in cold, still weather, fleece is often the better choice. It insulates well without much weight, and it is easy to maintain.
For active work with moderate physical load in changeable weather, softshell is the clear winner. A good softshell jacket handles light rain for a while, stops the wind effectively, and gives enough freedom of movement to climb, bend and reach. The tight woven face is also more resistant to scrapes and wear than fleece, which tends to pill over time.
On branding, both fabrics take embroidery well. Fleece gives a slightly “deeper” look as the thread sinks into the material, while embroidery on softshell sits tight and sharp on the smooth surface. DTF print works excellently on softshell but is more challenging on fleece because of the uneven texture. For fleece we recommend embroidery as the primary method.
Our recommendation is to keep both available for your team. A fleece for cold, still days, and a softshell for days with wind, light rain or physical activity. That gives flexibility and ensures staff can always dress for the conditions. At Universe Profile we can brand both garments with the same logo and offer a package that delivers good value.
